Shopping the menu
How to pick a cannabis strain
If you're new to cannabis — or just new to shopping an Ohio dispensary menu — the selection can feel overwhelming. A few honest pointers.
01
Sativa, indica, and hybrid labels are imperfect.
These categories are useful shorthand — sativas are often marketed as uplifting, indicas as relaxing — but the science doesn't cleanly back those predictions. Two "indica" strains can feel completely different. Use the category as a loose starting point, not a guarantee. For a deeper look, see our sativa vs. indica vs. hybrid explainer.
02
Terpenes often matter more than the category.
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give each strain its smell, and they play a big role in how a strain feels. A citrus-smelling strain high in limonene will usually hit differently than one heavy with pine or diesel notes. If you've loved a strain before, look at its dominant terpenes — that's a better predictor than name or category.
03
THC percentage isn't the whole story.
Higher THC doesn't automatically mean a better experience. Terpene profile, product format (flower versus edible versus concentrate), and your personal tolerance all matter. For context on the two most-discussed cannabinoids, see our guide on THC vs. CBD.
04
When in doubt, ask a budtender.
Bloom budtenders can walk you through what's on the menu, recommend strains based on what you've liked before, and explain products at your pace. No question is too basic — and your first dispensary visit should feel like a conversation, not a test. See our first-visit guide for what to expect.

Frequently asked questions
Ohio strains & brands, answered
What cannabis brands are sold at Bloom Ohio dispensaries?
Bloom carries a curated roster of Ohio cannabis brands, including Buckeye Relief, Butterfly Effect, Certified Cultivators, Eden's Trees, Firelands Scientific, King City Gardens, Kiva Confections, Klutch, Riviera Creek, RYTHM, and Woodward Fine Cannabis. Our lineup grows as new Ohio cultivators come online. Brand and strain availability varies by store and inventory cycle — check your local menu for what's in stock today.
Are these strains available for both medical patients and adult-use customers?
Yes, most are. Since Ohio adult-use retail sales began in August 2024, the majority of cannabis products sold at Ohio dispensaries are available to both adult-use customers (21+) and Ohio medical marijuana patients. Some products and purchase volumes remain reserved for medical patients under Ohio Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) rules. Your budtender can clarify what's available to you at checkout.
How can I check which strains are in stock at my local Bloom?
Every Bloom Ohio dispensary has a live menu you can browse online. Open the menu for your nearest location, filter by category (flower, vapes, edibles, concentrates) or brand, and you'll see current availability. Menus update throughout the day as inventory changes.
What's the difference between sativa, indica, and hybrid strains?
The sativa/indica/hybrid system is a traditional way of categorizing cannabis. Sativas are often marketed as uplifting, indicas as relaxing, and hybrids as a mix — but modern research suggests these labels are imperfect predictors of how a strain actually feels. Terpene profile is often a stronger signal. For the full breakdown, see our sativa vs. indica vs. hybrid explainer.
