Adults 21 and older can buy adult-use cannabis at any licensed Ohio dispensary with a valid government-issued ID. Medical patients can buy through Ohio's medical program with a state-issued MMJ card — at 21+ on their own, or 18+ with a registered caregiver. Do I need a medical card to buy cannabis in Ohio?
No. Since adult-use sales began in August 2024, anyone 21 or older can buy cannabis at a licensed Ohio dispensary with a valid ID. An Ohio MMJ card still has advantages worth considering — different tax treatment, access to certain higher-potency products, and other patient-specific benefits — but it's no longer the only way to purchase.
How much cannabis can I buy at one time in Ohio?
Under Ohio's adult-use law, customers 21+ can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis flower and up to 15 grams of extract per transaction. Medical patients have separate limits tied to a state-tracked 90-day supply. Limits can change as the program evolves — check the Ohio Division of Cannabis Control for the most current rules.
