What Are THC Suppositories? How They Work & What to Know
What are THC suppositories? How rectal and vaginal cannabis suppositories work, what research says, whether they get you high and how to use them safely.

Cannabis suppositories might sound new, but cannabis has a long history in medicine. Ancient Egyptian medical texts mention cannabis preparations, including ones used rectally and vaginally. Today, THC and CBD suppositories are a niche format: less familiar than flower, vapes or edibles, and much less studied.
This guide covers what cannabis suppositories are, how they differ from other formats, what research does and doesn’t say, and the practical basics of using them safely.
What Are THC Suppositories?
THC and CBD suppositories are small, round, cone- or bullet-shaped doses designed to be inserted into the rectum or vagina. Once inside, the suppository melts and releases its cannabinoids.
They can contain THC, CBD or a combination of both. Because cannabinoids are fat-soluble, suppositories usually use a fatty base such as coconut oil, cocoa butter or avocado oil.
How Suppositories Differ From Other Formats
- Route of absorption. Instead of being inhaled or digested, cannabinoids are absorbed through the mucous membranes of the rectum or vagina.
- Bypassing digestion. Edibles are processed by the liver before reaching the bloodstream, which changes how THC is felt. Rectal absorption largely avoids that first pass, so the experience can differ from an edible. See cannabis bioavailability for how absorption compares across formats.
- A more local effect. Some of the cannabinoids act on tissue near where the suppository dissolves, similar in idea to a topical, though some also enter the bloodstream.
- No smoke and nothing to swallow. For some people, that’s the main appeal.
Rectal vs. Vaginal Suppositories
Many products are labeled for either use; others are made for one route only. Always follow the product label. Research on vaginal absorption of cannabinoids is especially limited, so if you’re considering that route, talk with a healthcare provider first.

What Does the Research Say?
Honestly, not much yet. Cannabis suppositories have been studied far less than other formats. Early work on rectal absorption is mixed, and how much THC reaches the bloodstream appears to depend heavily on the product’s formulation.
You’ll find plenty of claims online about suppositories helping with specific conditions. Those claims are mostly based on anecdotes rather than clinical trials. If you’re interested in suppositories for a health reason, a healthcare provider, ideally one familiar with medical cannabis, is the right person to talk to.
Will a THC Suppository Get You High?
It depends on the person and the product. Some people report little or no high from THC suppositories, while others report noticeable effects. Because there isn’t much research, there’s no reliable way to predict how one will feel for you.
Treat a THC suppository like any THC product: start low, go slow, and don’t drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you. Follow the dosing on the product label, and ask your budtender or healthcare provider if you’re unsure. Our edible dosing guide explains the start-low approach.

How to Use a Suppository
Always follow the instructions on the package. In general:
- Chill it first. Suppositories are easier to insert when firm. Many manufacturers recommend keeping them refrigerated.
- Wash your hands.
- Get comfortable. Lying on your side with your knees drawn up, or standing with one leg raised, both work.
- Insert it. Gently insert the suppository, tapered end first. A little water-based lubricant can help.
- Stay put for a bit. It usually takes 15–20 minutes to melt. Using one before lying down, such as at bedtime, helps avoid leakage.
Safety Tips
- Check the ingredients for anything you’re allergic or sensitive to, including the oil base.
- Talk to your healthcare provider before trying suppositories, especially if you’re pregnant or nursing, have a medical condition, or take other medications.
- Don’t combine it with driving. THC can impair you however it’s taken.
- Store them safely, refrigerated if the label says so, and away from children and pets in their original packaging. See how to store cannabis.
Are THC Suppositories Legal?
THC suppositories are only sold where cannabis is legal, through licensed dispensaries, and availability varies by state and by store. Hemp-derived CBD suppositories with no THC are sold more widely, though rules vary by state.
Looking for Alternatives at Bloom?
Bloom doesn’t currently carry suppositories. If you’re interested in non-smoked formats, our budtenders can walk you through options like tinctures, edibles and topicals.
